Philosophy Statement

The Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka recognizes the ever-changing needs of the aged and infirm. As a Christian organization, by the grace and help of God, we provide a Home where individuals can live and enjoy an atmosphere supporting their spiritual, physical and emotional well-being. Here love and understanding are offered to all persons in the latter years of their lives without regard to race, color or religion. We believe in the dignity of the human person, recognizing that each person has physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs and rights and that these rights must be respected and cannot be violated. This respect is reflected in the tireless efforts in this Home to serve and preserve life, and to prepare for its termination when death is inevitable through spiritual support, understanding and empathy for the resident and their family members.

History

The Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka’s ministry of serving and caring for older adults began in the fall of 1962. Interest in such a ministry was prompted by the wishes and funding of a local individual who designated a portion of his estate for the express purpose of erecting a home for the aged. Many people, moved to support this project, added generous monetary contributions along with innumerable hours of labor that eventually culminated in the reality of this special ministry.

Construction began in September of 1964. Dedication of the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka was on January 16, 1966. Five days prior to the dedication, our first two residents, who were siblings, moved into their new home.

In September of 1970 another option for senior living opened when an apartment wing was added to the existing building, providing eleven apartment units. These units were designed to accommodate individuals 65 years of age or older who do not require nursing care or medical supervision. Additional land immediately east of the Home had been purchased in 1969 and in the summer of 1973 work began on the construction of retirement cottages. These duplexes also provide independent living for people over 65 years of age.

In 1973 another individual bequeathed her estate to the Home with a desire to continue expansion of serving the older adults in our area. These funds were used to build an addition to the nursing facility, providing the ability to serve an additional 40 individuals.

Recognizing the need for additional options for senior housing in our community, a 24 unit condominium was built in 1989. The one and two bedroom suites in this facility provide a high level of privacy in a congregate living environment.

In the spring of 1993 construction started on a new 2 story wing on the health center which added additional skilled nursing beds and a state of the art special memory support unit for individuals suffering from dementia. Upon completion in the fall of 1994 our community campus now provided 119 licensed nursing beds in the Health Care Center and 55 independent senior living units.

Desiring to enhance the home like environment of the Health Care Center, an addition was made in 2002 to add two new dining rooms with satellite kitchens allowing residents greater menu choices that could be prepared to order. Additionally a large activity room and therapy services were provided and renovation to provide a special hospice room, guest dining room, and general store was completed.

Additional services are being explored to continue to grow to meet the changing needs of the older adults in our community.

We are thankful for those who had a vision of serving the elderly and continue to fulfill the mission that they began over 40 years ago.
